The school year is underway and fall activities are beginning to kick into gear, but cooler days are just around the corner… and so is basketball season!
The Williamstown Youth Center offers an in-house program for children grades 1-6 who want to improve their basketball skills and learn the ins and outs of the game. Travel basketball is offered through our partner, the Greylock Youth Basketball Association (GYBA). Players with a desire to play in a more competitive environment around Berkshire County are invited to try out for travel teams.
Regardless of the program, the goal is to give children the opportunity to grow to love the game of basketball alongside friends.
Please take a moment to let us know your child is interested so we have a sense of numbers and can plan for practice space accordingly. More information and formal registration will follow. Practice and game times will be shared in late October and the season will begin the first week of November.
In the WYC’s organized basketball program players are placed in programs in grade divisions. Younger players learn fundamentals at the WYC and higher grades practice and play a full schedule of games. Fundamentals, skill development, and sportsmanship are emphasized. You must be registered to take part.
K-2 Development Program
Players in grades kindergarten through 2nd grade participate in a co-ed program focused on learning basic basketball skills and terminology.
In-House and Travel Leagues
The WYC basketball league for players in grades 3 through 6 is the In-House League. All teams are made up of players from Lanesborough and/or Williamstown. All games are played amongst teams from the league. There are usually 4 teams in each division. All players are welcomed regardless of skill level.
The Travel League is run by our partner GYBA and is for players in grades 3 through 8. Each division has one travel team. These teams play other teams throughout Berkshire County. Because space is limited on each team, players must tryout to earn a place on their division’s travel team.
Skills Assessments and Tryouts
For the In-House League, there will be a skills assessment session for each division at the beginning of November. Every player will get placed on a team. The sessions are led by various volunteer league coaches and recreation staff. This session is not a tryout. The assessment session helps us to even out teams according to players’ skills and experience. Balanced teams make for a fun and challenging season for everyone.
Volunteer coaches and assistant coaches are needed each year for our teams. The basketball program has about 23 teams and it wouldn’t be successful without the dedication, knowledge, and time given to the program by all of our amazing volunteers. If you are interested in coaching, please call our office at 413.458.5925 or email Mike Williams at firstname.lastname@example.org.
